Thunder Of Freedom – Playing Pankhurst, by Alison Saunders

Ever since I discovered one Llanelli’s fabulous blue plaques dedicated to Emmeline Pankhurst, visionary leader of the Suffragettes who came to the Parish Hall on the 20th of January 1912, I couldn’t help wondering what impact she made on the people of Llanelli at a time of intense industrial strife in the town. An idea took hold that I should recreate that event, stepping into the role of Mrs Pankhurst myself! Thunder of Freedom (a phrase taken from the anthem of the Suffragette movement) became a one-act play inspired by her visit, based on archived newspaper coverage of the event and on Emmeline Pankhurst’s own words and various other research sources. The play, performed on the 24th and 25th July 2026, also depicted her personal and political struggles, her indomitable spirit and the wider ordeals of the Suffragette campaign.

Llanelly House provided a perfect performance venue because of its unique and elegant décor, accessibility, refreshments and central location, only a stone’s throw from the Parish Hall. I was amazed by such positive feedback. The play seemed to resonate with audiences and they were immensely supportive. But I definitely could not have brought this idea to fruition without the wonderful staff at Llanelly House and in particular, Joy Jones, Heritage and Communications Officer who supported and promoted Thunder of Freedom so brilliantly right from the start.

I was thrilled that Dr Helen Pankhurst, Emmeline’s own great granddaughter, not only gave me her blessing to use Emmeline’s words in this play, but she also came all the way from Cambridge to watch the performance! Her presence gave the audience an extra unexpected treat! I was also privileged to perform in front of both the Mayor and Dame Nia Griffith, MP for Llanelli who joined Helen in an informal discussion after the performance. My heartfelt thanks go to all those who came to see the play in July. Look out for future performances of this and other live drama events at Llanelly House!
